Senator Richard Caldwell (R-MO) publicly lauded a new education funding bill Thursday morning—only to be reminded mid-interview that he had voted against it last year.

“I think this is a tremendous step forward for our schools,” Caldwell said during a televised interview, gesturing enthusiastically. “It’s exactly the kind of legislation that will benefit our children, our teachers, and communities across the country.” 

An aide, quietly trying to suppress a laugh, whispered a reminder that Caldwell had cast a “No” vote on the bill during its original passage. Caldwell paused, smiled awkwardly, and then responded: “Uh… next question.” 

Caldwell’s office released a statement later in the day emphasizing his ongoing commitment to education and promising to “review past votes thoroughly to avoid any future confusion,” though critics questioned whether the senator’s memory issues were isolated or systemic.
