In a first-of-its-kind ruling, 7-year-old Olivia Mendizabal was found guilty Thursday of child neglect – not of a sibling or pet, but of her long-time imaginary friend, Mr. Fluffles. The case, heard in Moesburg Family Court, has drawn national attention for its unusual circumstances.

According to court records, Olivia reportedly failed to provide adequate attention, emotional support, and playtime for Mr. Fluffles, who has been her constant companion since age four. “He’s been there through bedtime stories, tea parties, and recess,” stated the court-appointed child advocate. “To simply abandon him is considered a serious breach of duty in our eyes.”

The court ordered Olivia to complete a series of corrective measures, including daily check-ins with Mr. Fluffles, mandatory play sessions, and an imaginative arts therapy program designed to strengthen her relationship with her imaginary companion. Failure to comply could result in community service, specifically volunteering to host tea parties for younger imaginary friends. 

Olivia’s parents expressed shock at the ruling. “We thought imaginary friends were… imaginary,” said her mother, Ashley Mendizabal. “But the judge seemed very serious about the whole Mr. Fluffles situation.”

Legal experts say the case sets a precedent, though many are questioning its enforceability. “How do you verify neglect when the victim exists only in the child’s mind?” asked local attorney Jacob Bradford. “This could open the door to a whole new category of child welfare cases.”

Meanwhile, Olivia reportedly seems unbothered by the verdict. When asked about the ruling, she reportedly replied, “Mr. Fluffles is fine. He said he doesn’t need therapy, just more cookies.”
