MOESBURG, Ok. —

Members of First Trendy Baptist Church have voted to rebrand themselves as a rec center.

“We only kept the ‘church’ part in for the tax-exempt status,” said Pastor Dan Wilson. “But we figured that by labeling ourselves as a rec center, we could attract enough heathens to make the change worth it. And as a megachurch, we reach a lot of different kinds of people, so we wanted to represent those who aren’t Christian, and we want to send the message that your sin is welcome here.”

The idea was first proposed by Elder Steve Parr on the church’s recent mission trip on a Caribbean cruise. A small number of the congregation’s more conservative members resisted the change, but when the worship team played a Justin Bieber-inspired song titled It’s Okay to Unfollow Jesus, even they were convinced.

This is not the first major change the church has made in its 62 years of existence. In 1996, the name was changed from “First Baptist Church” to “First Trendy Baptist Church.” The church has received criticism from neighboring church Elm Grove Baptist Church and its pastor, Rev. Todd Thomas, better known as Pastor Todd. Todd criticized both name changes as well as the church’s sermon lengths, which have been decreasing from 2 hours to 2 minutes to ensure time for Ultimate Frisbee tournaments in the sanctuary-turned gym.

Whatever Pastor Todd might think, the “church,” or rather, rec center, is a hit with the youth. Teenagers no longer have to host secret parties when their parents are away; Pastor Dan has been hosting teen church parties for years. In the words of Pastor Dan, “It’s all cool, man.”
