Lanie Shire, a former employee at the Waterford Center of Technology, has filed a lawsuit against the company. The board of directors decided to fire her on Monday for bringing Brody, her emotional support buffalo, to work with her. We talked with Shire about the ordeal in an interview.
“Brody has been the only one there for me since my parents passed in October,” Shire told us. “You see, earlier this year, I was in a fender bender, and that was really emotionally troubling for me. My parents always supported me after that, but once they were gone, I had no one. But then I found out about emotional support animals, and I knew I needed one. I decided to train one myself, and began searching for animals in need of a home. When I finally found Brody, everything got better. He has always been so sweet, and gentle, and he walks wonderfully on a leash. Things were going so well for me, but when I lost my job, I couldn’t take it anymore.”
We spoke with some members of the board of directors at the Waterford Center of Technology. The president, Peter Mason, who asked to remain anonymous, says that when he hired her, he had no idea Shire would be accompanied by a buffalo in the office, and he is currently regretting ever hiring her. Though Mason did not say why he regrets hiring Shire, we have suspicions that it could be the now zoo-scented office he works in causing these feelings.
Shire says she plans to sue the Waterford Center of Technology until they crumble. She also told us that her therapist had suggested she consider getting an emotional support animal, though this therapist has not confirmed whether or not she said a 2,000 pound buffalo would be a good choice.
Shire also worries that she will soon be homeless, as well as jobless, as her landlord is close to discovering that she has been housing a buffalo on the premises.
